Beverly Krystosek named new principal at West Intermediate School

Sutherlin School District has chosen Myrtle Creek Elementary School Principal Beverly Krystosek to fill that same role at West Intermediate School.

Krystosek brings 20 years of experience in education to West Intermediate. Krystosek is no stranger to the Sutherlin community, as she was working as the school counselor at Sutherlin High School before accepting the principal position at Myrtle Creek Elementary School five years ago. This prior experience with the Sutherlin School District is what drew her back, knowing the extent to which the district goes to provide strong support for teachers and student learning.

“I believe they have a really strong administrative team,” Krystosek said. “An example of this is the quality and frequency of professional development that is designed to strategically support teacher effectiveness and increase student learning.”

Krystosek also says she likes how Sutherlin is dedicated to the Response to Intervention (RTI) process, where frequent and regular data is used to make sure students are receiving appropriate interventions to support individual student learning.

“(Sutherlin) has been applying RTI to English and language arts courses for approximately eight years,” Krystosek said. “This year they are also applying the RTI process to math, increasing their use of data and interventions for student support and adding more math related professional development in the subject.”

Krystosek also says she is impressed with the quality of leadership in the district.

“I believe they have a truly collaborative administrative team, Krystosek said. “This is important to me; just as teachers should not be teaching in isolation, administrators can maximize their effectiveness when they have a great team to work with.”

Krystosek’s top goals for when she begins her new role at West Intermediate are to make sure the schools’ grade-level reconfiguration and filling in the new teacher vacancies all go smoothly.

“There will be several new faces at West next year. I want to be sure we continue West Intermediate’s sense of community and family,” Krystosek said. “Additionally, I want to continue the direction West has been taking to improve student learning and to communicate with staff and the community to discover their needs and goals.”

Krystosek is scheduled to start at West Intermediate on July 8. She invites families and staff to drop in during the summer to get acquainted.

She says, “My door is always open, stop in any time!”
